The model of leadership is evolving from hierarchical to a more distributed structure. It’s now more important than ever to have to strong leaders in every role at every level, not just one or two at the top of the organization.
My views of leadership have evolved a little bit over time. I mean when I first started working the model of leadership was different. It was more management and it was more hierarchical. We had one or two strong leaders at the top of the organization. They were really smart; they knew their industry; they created the strategy; and the rest of us just did our jobs. We carried out orders. Today the model of leadership is very different. It’s more distributed and I think that’s the biggest difference is the importance of having strong leadership in every role, at every level. We have big expectations of leaders today, but they’re not just those CEOs or the executive suite — it’s about leaders at the mid-level leaders, leaders at the frontline, individual contributors who bring strong technical expertise that are seen as leaders. And I think a lot of leaders don’t fully appreciate how important their roles are and the kind of impact we need them to have on their companies. And that’s the shift. We need everyone to embrace leadership accountability in every role.
